Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Serving the Upstate for Over 75 Years!

Greenville Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine

Alternative Treatment Options

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), although relatively new to the Western world, has been used to treat animals for thousands of years. Treatment options may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and diet therapy.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Ashley Barr as an integral part of our hospital staff. She graduated from Clemson University and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia in 2010. Having experienced firsthand what TCVM could do for her own pet she pursued certification and graduated from the Chi Institute of TCVM in 2018.

Dr. Barr explains that acupuncture can be used to treat musculoskeletal problems such as osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc disease, inflammation of ligaments and tendons, and muscle strains and sprains. Other conditions that may benefit from acupuncture include behavior disorders, allergies, nausea related to chemotherapy, respiratory disorders, and skin problems.

The success of the treatment will vary according to the skill of the veterinarian, the condition being treated, and the number and frequency of treatments. For small animals, the insertion of acupuncture needles into various acupuncture points is virtually painless. Most patients become very relaxed and may even fall asleep during the treatment. We offer a designated acupuncture room that has dimmable lighting, soft music is played, and bubbling water adds to a spa-like environment. As a caregiver, you will be allowed to remain with your pet during the entire session.

Acupuncture is one of the safest forms of medical treatment for animals when administered by a properly trained veterinarian. Acupuncture is often viewed as a form of complementary therapy and is best when used in conjunction with conventional and alternative therapies. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA®) considers veterinary acupuncture a valid modality within the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery.
